I awoke in a daze, as of course I drank too much… again. The shower was hurried and I took to dressing like a tiger takes to meat. I was late! Walking out the door with a slice of toast with Vegemite, my headphones firmly attached to my head, the music tuned to my new favourite sound, Foster the People. This was a day that I imagined would not go well, from such a start comes nothing of an end.

As I walked down a Melbourne street, I realised that in fact the day was glorious and sublime. The wind ever so light, but the sun ever so bright. My day looked slightly up, although… I was still late. As I approached Brunswick street eagerly looking for a taxi, nothing. As I looked to the right, there was no tram in sight… I kept walking, every other step with a bit of a hop, there was an avid pace in every step. Approaching Nicholson street my speed increased which in fact turned into a run, looking to the right again, there was no tram again. This was not going well.

As I crossed Nicholson street I knew that the next road that had a tram crossing it was Lygon street, this was my last chance to get a tram, my last shortcut out of here. I walked eagerly, every step, every breath seemed forced, my body was telling me to stop. As I looked to the corner of Lygon street I quickly checked my phone, Tram Tracker would set my pace. As I looked at my phone, it being ever so clever locating the closed stop. Stop 114, tram arriving in 1 min, I can make this! My eager step turned into a jog, then a sprint as I saw the lights change. One final burst of speed, I had made the stop, I had made the lights and incidentally the tram… ding ding, such a sweet sound of success.

As I battled onto the busy tram, the hotness encroached, I became one of the many sardines in a pool of oil and sweat. Looking around, everyone is just on autopilot, no one can see you and no one cares. If only a window was open, if only I was close to a window, this might have been some how bearable… but after all I had made the last short cut out of here.

As the tram arrived at Melbourne University, ever so slowly puling up to the stop, the doors opened and like a pin to a ballon everyone exploded out of the doors. Gasping for air, it was amazing… I was so close now. As the fresh air swept past my skin, the sweat evaporating with every gust, my body began to cool.

Arriving at work, some excitement that I have actually made it, some feeling of success that I had actually made it this far in one piece and without the need for a taxi that would have cost me more than paring the car in the staff car park. Although as I thought to my self, I think for the best still knowing that my BAC was probably still over the limit. Probably the best decision I have made so far that I did not drive into work this morning.

Autopilot set in again… computer out, plugged in, all necessary programs booted up. Brain was still in lockdown though, I knew that only that brown liquid, that organic suspension in water would bring me back to some kind of reality. Coffee! That’s what I needed. I quickly messaged Michelle to come down at once, to which she did and off we went to the saviour that is Kere Kere. Michelle knew by the bags under my eyes, the croak in my throat that I had had a big night. After explaining the chain of events, she smiled, she giggled… in fact I don’t know what I had done, all I knew was that I had done too much, to much for my body to handle.

Needless to say, my day went slowly, my productivity not high, but not hopeless I suppose either. As I started this email, I started it for you Val. I started it so you could be part of my day, maybe not the best day in my life but a day that we have all had before and of course one worth sharing.
